Who gets this permesso?

The Permesso di Soggiorno per Calamità is intended for those whose countries are facing a severe natural disaster or other calamities.

For this type of permit, the new 'Decreto Cutro' of May 2023  established that it can be granted only when the situation in the country of origin of the applicant is ‘momentaneous, due to an exceptional situation’. Territorial Commissions will interpret this change in wording when evaluating your case and decide case by case if your case meets this criteria.

How can I get this permesso?

You can request this permesso at the Questura (Immigration Office). The Questura will then collect information and documentation on the situation in your country of origin to understand if it’s safe for you to go back there.

In case you need support, you can seek the help of a lawyer. If you don’t have a lawyer, you can message us on Facebook and we’ll help you find a free legal service in your area.

How long is it valid for?

This kind of permesso is valid for 6 months and can be renewed until the situation in your home country does not improve.

How can I renew this kind of permesso?

Following the entry into force of 'Decreto Cutro' in May 2023, this permit is now renewable for six months only, as long as the exceptional situation of natural disasters or other calamities in your home country persists.

You can make an appointment to ask to renew your permesso at the Questura. The Territorial Commission may renew your permesso if it decides it's still unsafe for you to go back to your country of origin because of the severe natural disaster or calamity.

If the Commission does not renew your permesso, you may be eligible for a different kind of permesso. A lawyer can help you understand how to proceed in your specific case.
